Category of vehicle you can drive with Indian International Driving Permit or International Driving License ?
There are two categories of vehicle available in International Driving Permit or International Driving license as mentioned below,
- A = This category is applicable to drive Two Wheeler (with or withour side -car) + Invalid carriage (vehicle for specially challenged person) + Three wheeled vehicle with unlaiden weight not exceeding 400 kg .(Unlaiden Weight = Weight of emty vehicle without Driver, Laiden Weight = Unlaiden weight + Weight of goods )
- B = This category is applicable to drive vehicles which is used to transport passenger upto 8 seats in addition to driver seat or To transport goods with permissible laiden weight not exceeding 3500 kg .(In short this category is for Four wheeler motor car)
What is the validity of Indian International Driving Permit or International Driving License?
International Driving Permit is valid for one year from the date of issue or till the validity of your driving license whichever is earlier.

How to apply for Indian international driving license or International driving permit in india from home?
Yes,You can apply for international driving license or International driving permit online from home, It is not compulsory for applicant to visit RTO personally to get International Driving Permit, He or She can apply from their home and their relative or known person can collect this IDP from RTO .(If you are already at abroad then you can apply by faceless service and your IDP will be picked up from RTO by your relative and the same you will get at abroad through postal services)
You can apply for IDP by two different methods ,
- Faceless
- Non – Faceless
We will discuss both in details, please go through below mentioned step by step procedure to apply for IDP,
2.select your state from dropdown menu
3.select apply for IDP
4.Press continue
5.Enter your Driving License Number and other details and click on get DL detail,
6.Now window with your DL detail will be opened, check it and select yes option as per attached screenshot, enter your pin code and press enter system will automatically take state and RTO applicable for that pin code, then click on proceed,
7.select NA in employee category and press confirm in this screen
8. Now you have two options
If you are already at location out of India then go for faceless application, for that select submit via Aadhar authentication (your name on license and Aadhar should be matched perfectly to go with this option if it is different then first you should apply for name change in dl and then proceed to apply for IDP)
If you want to apply for non faceless then select submit without Aadhar authentication, in this option you have to go to RTO for photo capture,
Here we will proceed with non -faceless application,
9.select without Aadhar authentication, now enter your mobile number and OTP and continue to next step,
10.select issue of IDP and press proceed
11.Fill up details as required, birth place, passport no, validity of passport, county for which IDP required, visa number is not compulsory so avoid to enter it, SELECT COV A OR B OR A & B both, click on confirm, (Basically A is for 2 wheeler and B is for 4 wheeler),
12.Now click on Self Declaration form, fill up details as selected and click on submit,
13. Now click on all the check box, enter captcha code and press submit button,
14. Now you have form with application number on your screen,
15.Enter Application number, DOB and captcha and then press on submit,
16. Now you have Form 1A on right side of your screen, download form 1A, print it and signed it from doctor having MBBS and above qualification,
17.Now click on upload documents and click proceed,
18.Now upload all three required documents, Form 1A, Driving License and Passport, then click on next,
19.Now upload photo and signature and click on next,
20.Now proceed for fee payment,
21.Now book service slot and go to the selected RTO with xerox of your application form, Form 1A with sign and stamp of doctor, xerox of Driving License and passport (Also bring original documents).
22.After verifying all the documents RTO will issue International Driving Permit in the book form.
